Removal Methods
Files which are determined to be duplicates and safe for removal can be dealt with in several ways by Doppelganger. The files can be Moved, they can be Deleted, or they can be sent to the Recycle Bin.
The safest removal method is to Move the file. This way, if it turns out that the file was important, it can be easily restored. Two Move methods are provided: Move to DUPES Folder and Move to Other Folder. These two move methods function very differently.
Move To Other Folder
The Move to Other Folder method moves the file to a folder specified by the user. If a file with this same name already exists in the destination folder, the file being moved is renamed using an auto-numbering system.
Move To DUPES Folder
The Move to DUPES Folder method moves the file to a folder called DUPES. The DUPES folder location can be viewed and changed in the Options Menu. When the file is copied to the DUPES folder, its original path information is retained. For example, if the file's original specification was "C:\My Stuff\My Docs\Resume.doc", the file's new specification will be "%DUPES\[C:]\My Stuff\My Docs\Resume.doc". This makes it easy to see where a file came from and allows you to quickly restore the file, if necessary.
Send To Recycle Bin
The Send To Recycle Bin option is also relatively safe. Files removed using this method are sent to the Windows Recycle Bin and can be restored using the Recycle Bin's built in restore functionality. It should be noted however that files on Removable drives and Network drives are not sent to the Recycle Bin, they are deleted permanently. This is per Microsoft Window's design - Doppelganger has no control over this behavior.
Delete Permanently
The Delete Permanently option is very dangerous and should rarely be used. Files removed in this manner cannot be restored without the aid of an undelete utility.
